YONI STEAMING
If you've never heard of yoni steaming before, you are not alone. Although it is an ancient practice used in different cultures all over the world, modern society hasn't exactly been made aware of its benefits. I have been steaming for about 10 months now, and it has completely changed my life, and I don't say that lightly.
I'm sure you're in need of self-care, we ALL are. Not only is this session extremely relaxing, but it also helps you communicate with your body, one on one. We're accustomed to ignoring the messages our body sends us or putting bandages over wounds that need healing. In order to stop that negative cycle, I shut out all distractions, open myself up, and just exist in my space. In other words, just sit back and listen.
About a year ago, I was introduced to the beautiful practice of Yoni Steaming, which it is an ancient natural remedy to cleanse, regulate cycles, and ease discomfort of the Yoni. I was first introduced to it through my research of PCOS (PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome), and learned about it from the beloved Veladya, through her YouTube channel, EarthMamaMedicine. Yoni Steaming is always, ALWAYS a part of my Self Care Saturday.
**If you do not have / are not concerned about PCOS, feel free to skip to the next section:
For years I have been dealing with odd symptoms that I or my doctors could never explain. Irregular periods, crazy moods that I knew couldn't be normal, excess hair growth, acne, weight gain, bloating, cramping and discomfort. Those are the main symptoms I've had, but I know there are more that some people experience.
I can't count how many times I tried to track and control my cycle, but NEVER could understand it. It would come on time for a couple months, then not show up for a few months. Or I would spot for a few days, then get my cycle two weeks later? I know those that went through the same thing, can imagine the constant stress. Let alone the amplified emotions from whatever hormone problems that brings. I was (still can be) an emotional roller coaster. I feel for my husband, because I know how hard it is to BE like this, it can't be easy to deal with either. Especially if you want to start a family.
After feeling so exhausted from trying to deal with this alone, I did my own research. After looking at EVERYTHING that had to do with the reproductive system, I found PCOS. The symptoms were identical, and I was relieved to finally have found my answer! I'm not one of those to diagnose myself, but when I tell you I KNEW, I knew.
I read story after story of women with PCOS, finally feeling like I wasn't crazy, because I wasn't the only one. It felt good to KNOW. Which is why I am writing this. For those that maybe just found out or still have no idea and are searching for answers. I saw quite a few women say that doctors don't like to diagnose people with PCOS, or don't really bother with it since there is no real treatment for it yet. When I told my doctor I thought I had PCOS, she said I didn't but told me I could get an ultrasound to see if I wanted to. Of course, I did, and what do you know. Cysts all over both of my ovaries. It was a weird feeling to see that on the screen, because I could FEEL something was different for years and now, I'm looking at it.
Some doctors suggest taking birth control to regulate your periods with PCOS, but I am pretty conscious about what I put in my body and pills are something I just don't do. If absolutely necessary I would, but as someone that took many different kinds of anti-depressants growing up, I decided man-made medicine just isn't for me. If you are interested in herbal medicine that I started taking, feel free to contact me, but right now I am focusing on YONI STEAMING, and how that rejuvenated my cycle like never before.
LET'S GET STARTED!
First Step: Prepare your sitting area. Whether you're using a seat or a toilet.
Second Step: Get your pot of clean and filtered water on the stove to boil. Once it boils, put in your YONI STEAMING herbs, and let them steep.
Third Step: Insert your steaming pot of herbs into the toilet, or under the open seat chair, and sit/squat over. (If it's too hot, let cool for a few seconds first)
Fourth Step: This is where you add your own personal style. I put on a good song, light a candle or incense, and meditate. Sitting straight up to allow the steam to do its thing.
Fifth Step: Once you're done, you can either pour your water and herbs down the drain or pour it outside.
Meditation in Step Four
Two songs that I use for meditation are:
"I release control" by Alexa Sunshine Rose on Spotify
"Grounded" by East Forest on Spotify
I usually use "I release control" when I'm feeling really emotional or stressed. Just as the title says, it is great for your self-care days, because it helps you release all the stress, problems, emotions, and anything negative that happened that week. I sit, chanting along with the song as I just let myself release all of the emotions lingering inside. Before starting, try sitting quietly while doing a breathwork exercise to open yourself up. That will bring everything to the surface for you to begin dealing with during the meditation.
"Grounded" is used when I just want to relax and steam. There's nothing specific on my mind or heart that I feel like bringing attention to, so this song is more of a mental journey to go on while I steam.
For those just beginning, I would use this song to sit and listen to your body like I mentioned before. While breathing and clearing your mind, just pay attention to what you feel, and where you feel it. Whether it's pain or pleasure, just acknowledge it. Deal with anything that comes up, or just enjoy BEING with yourself in peace.
